What Do You Mean by Strong vs Weak AI?
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the field of computer science that aims to create machines and systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, planning, and decision making. However, not all AI systems are created equal. Depending on their capabilities and goals, AI systems can be classified into two broad categories: strong AI and weak AI. I’ll be discussing it more below on this. It is part of my series — I am a dummy, enlighten me.
Weak AI: Specialized and Narrow
Weak AI, also known as specialized AI or narrow AI, is the type of AI that exists today. Weak AI systems are designed to perform specific tasks, such as playing chess, translating languages, recognizing faces, or driving cars. Weak AI systems can outperform humans on the tasks they are trained for, but they cannot generalize their knowledge or skills to other domains or situations. Weak AI systems operate under predefined rules and constraints, and they do not have self-awareness or consciousness.
