Movie Review: Rangitaranga: A Must Watch Kannada Movie

Director: Anup Bhandari
Producer: HK Prakash
Cast: Nirup Bhandari, Radhika Chetan, Avantika Shetty, Saikumar, Shilpa Singh, Arvind Rao, Chethan Raj, Anath Velu
Music: Ajaneesh Loknath

We couldn’t have been happier. The years 2013/14 saw 4 very good Kannada movies. 3 of them are original (Lucia, Ulidavaru Kandante and Ugram ), with Namma Kannada Haiklu as directors and the other one being Drushyam, which is a Malayalam remake.

It was a much needed fresh wave in the Kannada industry which had lost its originality and ability to make good movies.

Just as we got through the year 2014 with great smile and sense of pride, here comes 2015 with “Rangitaranga” (English: Colourful Wave).

tl;dr IMDB Rating: 9.2/10 and we agree!Go watch it

We don’t think we are qualified enough to rate a good movie. Hence, all we are doing here is collect reviews from different qualified people and quote them here.
That would be a good testimony to a movie this good by the people who are equally good.

Review 1 by Pawan Kumar of Lucia fame.

Pawan, who made the first crowd sourced movie in Indian movie industry, is a very good critic and a great ambassador of original Kannada movies. Here is what he posted on his Facebook wall and we quote him.

Saw Rangitarang… all the buzz around it is totally justified. Brilliant work. Very good cinematography and excellent background score. Very well narrated, one can see the hold the director has in storytelling.. the popular opinion is about a lil lag in the second half… but that is confusion we all Indian filmmakers go through… and sometimes we end up making the right decisions luckily… otherwise it is a tricky spot in Indian cinema where one has to think of boxoffice. I am sure that is what Anup Bhandari had to deal with too. But it is overshadowed by the very good ending. All in all a very good watch.. never bores you, the visuals will always keep you glued to the story. And you cant guess the end.. so what else do you need! GO WATCH. In my office, I have a secret chamber, called the Psycho Room. I am the only one who gets to go there… and there is a dart board there on the wall… I have to now add Anup’s picture to that board. Damn…!!! However, Yet another young talented deserving team going through the same problems. Its disheartening to see that the problem repeats but there isn’t a solution to this. Who to blame.. well — It is US! No one else. We all make a hue and cry when it affects us.. once we are through with the problem, we move on and if lucky attempt another one OR subscribe to the popular safe environment. UNITY. To be able to say NO to tempting popular well paying offers. Unless this whole thing is tackled with proper planning, it wont be solved. Good films like this will come.. face the reality… fight it… tire the team out… and the audience will wonder “what happened” . And the cycle continues… Look back …and you will remember some very good new age films which hit headlines and top stories on facebook.. and the directors are yet to make a comeback.. the problem is what is in the articles below. Have been ranting about this for so long…. I guess I should now get tired of it.

And this was added as a response to the post by the director of Rangitaranga Mr.Anup Bhandari.

This is just 2 words about the trailer, not the actual movie. Here’s the Youtube video with subtitles. This made me proud! Great job guys!

Review 3 by Namcinema.com a Kannada site about to movies

They say the movie’s freshness and music by Ajaneesh Lokanath makes it what it is.

By naming the movie as RangiTaranga (Colorful Wave), we are sure that Anup Bhandari has hinted about the colorful new wave that will soon hit the Sandalwood! This is yet another movie that adds to the list of experimental films, which is running on high expectations.

Review 5 by filmibeat.com

Filmibeat gave this movie a 3.5/5 and here’s what they have to say.

The main attraction of Rangitaranga is it’s amazing cinematography. For the first time a Kannada movie has brought Hollywood Cinematographer Lance Kalpan to the movie. Rangitaranga is a feast to watch. Viewers will enjoy watching each frame on the big screen.

Overall:

Rangitaranga is an excellent mysterious entertainer. After a longtime a thriller film has been released in KFI. Don’t miss to watch the feast, directed by new talents Anup Bhandari, Nirup Bhandari and others.

I think you guys get an idea of how this movie is.
Go book your tickets and watch it on the big screen.
