A Generation Bereft of Perspective & Gratitude

Perspective

First of all, lets acknowledge the fact that this is the best time to be alive in the history of humanity. And I don’t mean to ignore the terrible things that still continue to happen all around the world, every single day. But, if we take an overview of the aggregate, its much better than it has ever been.

This brings me to my point, along with the prosperity and abundance that is the outcome of the good times, there are some disadvantages of it as well. When a generation is born in times of adversity, the generation is tough, ofcourse it has its own shortcomings, but most important of all, it has a clear perspective. When a generation is born in times of abundance, often times they lack the perspective, they lack gratitude and it would be unfair to blame them as they haven’t faced “adversity”.

So “What is the unbearable outcome of a generation that hasn’t faced adversity?” you ask?

The first and foremost deal breaker with that generation is that they lack perspective. They have been born in an era of ease and smallest problems make them uncomfortable. The second problem is that they lack gratitude, they think whatever they have, even the newest iPhone, is nothing extra-ordinary and it is ‘obvious’ to have that. Little do they know, that there are places where even the most basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter are not that ‘obvious’ yet. And that perspective along with gratitude, I believe is the recipe for a human being of great character. Unless you dont know, how terrible the world has been, you’ll never be grateful for how luxurious your life is.

But, as i mentioned above, the generation does not ONLY have disadvantages. The generation that has been born in the era of abundance, is probably the only generation yet, that has seen such enormous talent, passion and intellect. And with fewer adversities, the generation has been able to focus on sharpening their gifts and making the world a better place!

It just so happened, i was recently reading a newspaper article, which in itself is rare occurance. But I read an interesting article about how a bunch of college students found a couple hundred bucks lying on the canteen table and asked around if anyone had forgotten to collect their money. No one claimed it and got back to their chit chat, so did the college students. But they noticed, after 10–15 minutes, an aged cafeteria employee, who would often draw sharp comparisions about the stark differences with his generations and “The Millenials”, came by the table where the money was and silently picked it up without anyone noticing, atleast thats what he thought. One of the college students noticed and was so overcome with angst that she decided to draft an open letter to a well known personality stating how the entire nation and the world as a whole never left one chance to bash the difference of opinion among them and the millenials but somehow always failed to notice that no matter how skewed a generation’s mindset is, they are also blessed with something good, something unique that the other generations do not have and fail to acknowledge. Here’s to a generation, no matter how flawed in their own ways, but is going to make a dent in the universe!
