Be In CTRL: Why Sza is the sister we never knew we had.
Your Twitter and Instagram timelines are probably flooding with lyrics from "Love Galore" or your Snapchat has followers serenading an invisible audience to "The Weekend".
The Tde Songbird Sza dropped her debut album "Ctrl" in June and it has impacted women and men alike. She takes us on a thrillride as she recounts romantic encounters throughout the course of her young life.
Tracks like "Super Model" and "Drew Barrymore" tackle self esteem issues we all face daily. Battles of never feeling good enough for love or yourself are extremely common. On a standout track "Garden" she embraces the idea of unconditional love though she’s aware she lives with faults. Fear of the unknown and disbelief that another human can love you beyond measure is relatable. She’s having a why me moment during the duration of this track.
"Broken Clocks" she expresses time isn’t always on our side when we’re attempting to be all we can be. Chasing dreams while juggling love can be draining. Bullshit that comes with romantic affairs adds frustration to the mix. She reminds those who have fallen short of her grace that she still adores them for the valuable lessons bestowed upon her. "Go Gina" is a track paying homage to 90’s bombshell and Martin’s partner in crime. It’s about letting your hair down to enjoy life. Living with zero restrictions is the message.
This album touches base on multiple topics all of society faces. Her melodic voice possesses a very morbid undertone as she gives us advice regarding love and life unintentionally. Her brutal honesty with a hint of delicacy is the driving force of the project.
Through her tracks she gives listeners a warm homey vibe as if she’s a friend to us or a sister. Interludes featuring the women in her life speaking are insightful, adding a comedic element to the body of work. "Always stand your ground heifer" "If you don’t speak up they’ll think you’re stupid." Are a few gems granny dropped.
Light wasn’t just shed on Sza we got to meet Solana for the first time due to her baring her soul. Her experiences are something I’m sure all the 20 somethings and those a bit older can understand. I’m ecstatic to see what Sza has hidden in her curly trenches next.
