In 1692, fudai daimyo Miura Akitaka transferred his domain to Nobeoka from Iwakidaira Domain in Mutsu Province. Although he had only 23,000 koku in Nobeoka, he worked hard to settle the aftermath of peasant uprisings and to resolve boundary disputes with Takanabe Domain and Bungo Province. Nobeoka eventually became the base of his family’s Naito clan, which ruled Nobeoka for eight generations until the Meiji Restoration.
