According to a study, nearly 93% of Indians are suffering from sleep related disorders. It can be inferred that a major chunk of our society is battling with insomnia and related disorders. It is a widespread suffering and what has left us perturbed is the diversity of population suffering from sleeplessness. The myth about sleep disorders that only people above 50 can suffer from sleeplessness is an absolute lie. A 10 year old child is as vulnerable as a 50 year old adult to suffer from sleep related disorders. This kind of ignorance towards good sleep can be dangerous as its aftermath may not be prompt, but is definitely unsustainable. The question is to analyze why a large part of our society is suffering from sleep related disorders and what kind of impact it can have on the coming generations.

Sleep disorder can be defined as the inability of getting good amount of sleep required for healthy functioning of the body. It is normal to experience occasional trouble in sleeping which might happen due to change in routine, environmental conditions, lifestyle or may be due to temporary illness. The agony starts when the problem of sleeplessness becomes a daily affair. The loss of sleep can leave you exhausted and cause hindrance in your personal as well as professional life. It has an absolute impact on the physical as well as mental health. Some of the consequences of inadequate sleep are strenuous relationships, impaired understanding, weight gains, dwindling job performance, bad performance in academics and depression. The necessity of good sleep helps you tune better with your body and enables you perform better.

Sleep problems can be caused by a number of factors which may vary, but the fundamental cause of sleeplessness is the disruption of body’s natural cycle of sleep. The common causes of sleep disorders are physical disturbances which includes temporary illness or an accident, psychiatric disorders which covers issues such as stress, anxiety and depression. Environmental factors such as light, noise and abnormal temperatures can also sometimes disrupt your slumber. It has been observed that sleep related disorders are on a rise during exams among students. The cut throat competition and the impulse to be the best are the prime reasons why students deal with sleep related problems at an early age. The pressure to perform well, everyday challenges, parental and peer pressure has left students and parents paying visits to a psychiatrist on a periodic basis. When a student is unable to meet expectations of his friends, parents and his own self, what follows is the mental breakdown which hampers his day to day activity. This ultimately leads to depression among the young adults. The barter of good health for success does not sustain for long but what sustains is prolonged mental and physical sickness.

Unceasing use of technology is another cause of sleeplessness among majority of population. The relation between smart phone and the youth of our country is indivisible and this kind of addiction affects our physical and social well being. It is hence proven that technology is a boon as well as a bane. There are number of studies conducted that prove that overuse of mobile phone is a major cause of sleep related problems among large chunk of the population. Poor work life balance can also be listed as one of the reasons of sleep related disorders among the working population of our country. The increasing pressure to perform better and odd number of working hours have left working force lamenting for quality sleep which leads to diminished job performance and poor personal life.

It should be realized that taking a good nap is not entertainment, but is inevitable for sound mental and physical well being. There are a number of ways to align your sleep cycle and to improve quality of sleep. We should include physical activity in our daily routine. Stress never solves any of our problems, but it definitely adds on our burden. Stress management is important in times of anxiety and crisis. Avoid being inconsistent about your sleep schedule, stick to a regular sleep schedule. Heavy intake of caffeinated beverages affects your sleeping pattern and keeps you awake for long hours at night, limit intake of coffee, alcohol and nicotine. Limit use of mobile phone, laptops and personal devices before going to bed as it suppresses the level of melatonin which helps in sound sleep.

The need of cognizance about importance of quality sleep is of great significance among the people of our country. If you are among the ones ignoring your sleep cycle, it is time to weigh the pros and cons of this ignorance Compromising on good health is tantamount to compromising on all aspects of our life. There is no one prosperous in the world than the one who is blessed with good health as health is the only wealth that is going to stay with us lifelong.
