Good article Jon. I wonder if this kind of lesson can be taught. My guess is that these are character traits that either a person developed early on or that they witnessed in their career and choose to emulate if their “moment” arrives (a version of taught I guess).
Having been in that sinking boat before, I’ve seen the true character of managers emerge. From the “pay me to show up” guys to the “let’s be humans together in this clusterf*ck and wind this sucker down as quickly and rationally as possible.”
From my experience I was able to sort between the people I’d never work for again (no matter what) and the folks who were my first choices for hiring when I arrived at a corner office.
