“Steady” beats “scalable”

I was chatting with my dad today about his private medical practice. The one he’s had for 30 years. The one that was resilient to economic downturns. The one that allowed our family financial comfort. The one that has seen hundreds (if not thousands) of loyal patients continuously return to see him.

I look at a service business like that and realize: While it’s not a billion-dollar unicorn, it’s still pretty damn good.

I completely agree with you, Jon Westenberg, that a successful business isn’t necessarily a scalable one. There are certainly pros/cons to a “non-scalable” service business, but at the end of the day, it’s still a business, regardless.
