Motivation

I was motivated to write this post. Apparently, motivation is the basis of every initiative. You have to find what motivates you to do something. Is it an object? Is it an idea? Is it a person? Is it a goal? Or a combination of these? Wherever your motivation is, find it, and stick to it. Then do what’s necessary, take steps to acheieve the goals.

The reason for today’s post is my recent impulse-purchase of a fitness tracker. I’ve played with some in the past, even gifted one to my uncle, though never really felt the need to buy one. One of the most impressive ones is the Xiaomi Mi Band 2. Pretty affordable and feature-packed for the price. I’ve been delaying buying it for quite a while, until I found myself in a Mi Store, just casually looking around with a group of people I spent the day with. And one of them started describing pretty impressive things about the band; nothing that I didn’t know already, but impressive nonetheless. That was the last straw. BAM! Bought it. Turns out, steps tracking is a good motivator to get up and move. My motivation mostly lies with gadgets and people who hold me accountable. I won’t be motivated to hit the gym, but with some nice gear (shoes and all), and someone to discipline me, the probability of doing so increases twofold. Side note (for gadgets), I might even start reading books after getting a Kindle (but that’s for another discussion). Lately, this tracker has motivated me to complete the goal of walking 6K steps a day (yeah, it isn’t that much), and I’ve been sharing this progress with some friends, which really helps. After getting used to it, the goal would probably go up to 8K steps a day (for now, typical couch potato here, doesn’t walk or work out). Speaking of couch, the aim is to proceed to doing C25K (Couch-to-5K) program. Let’s see how that goes.

So yeah, find what gets you out of laziness and boredom, and do something. Make something the motivation for action. Make sure you stick to it. Find an accountability partner, someone to share the progress with. Full disclosure (and I realize it’s late for this, considering it’s the end of the post), I’m a human, and not a motivation expert. I’ve started and failed so many times. Let’s see how long this one lasts. Hopefully longer than the previous streaks.
