Back in 2016, I developed a theory that Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris were actually still together, despite their public falling out and subsequent going-of-separate-ways. It was not a popular theory, which I respected. You can read my embarrassingly in-depth posts from 2016/2017 here. (I’m actually still proud of this one)
But then something happened. Taylor Swift published her Reputation magazines, released her album, and my theory didn’t pan out. More than that, in one of her Reputation letters she mentioned bloggers who would create theories about who her songs were about and those bloggers would be wrong. I sensed, from her letters and from the album, she was fed up. Rightfully so.
I felt her letter; I felt embarrassed that I spent time searching for clues about her love life. I felt guilty that I, like so many other people, didn’t respect her right to privacy. I felt confused since I’d thought we were all playing the easter egg game together when in fact I was the hunter and she was the fox.
I love a good riddle, I love searching for clues, but I felt gross. I felt I owed her an apology, but obviously I didn’t know this person. And so I did the next best thing: I just stopped writing.
My confirmation bias continued to see signs that maybe, just maybe, I could still be right but 1) my marriage was suffering from it (not really, but my husband was so.sick.of.hearing.me.talk.about.Taylor.Swift.and.Calvin.Harris) and 2) if, on the very, very, very off-chance these two individuals were still together how SHITTY would I be to continually try and expose them:
*Little kids playing hide-and-seek*
That One Kid: LOOK, HEY EVERYONE LOOK THEYRE HIDING OVER HERE!
*Everyone glares at that one kid*
I didn’t want to be that kid. But here’s the thing. It’s now May 2019. Taylor has zigged and she’s zagged and her new era aesthetic is so happy AF that I feel okay emerging from my gopher hole and pointing a few things out.
Is it possible these two artists parted ways as a romantic relationship but maintained a professional one, working on a massive project that has been in the works for years? Maybe. And my writer’s-heart would love that so much.
Here’s where I’ll start.
In October 2016, the music video for Harris’s song “My Way” was released. Hunny you better believe I combed that video like CRAZY for clues when it came out, but no matter how many times I watched it, I was continually stumped except for a few things. I even rewatched it a bunch after LWYMMD came out.
But look, let’s look at this Instagram post from Calvin Harris in Nov 2016. LOOK (I added the video names/timestamps + the pink comment)
The music video for “This is What You Came For” was released in June of 2016.
The video for “My Way” was released 3 months later, in Sept 2016.
Yet it’s clear that “My Way” was filmed BEFORE the former, since footage from it was featured behind Rihanna.
Here is why that is so significant.
Taylor secretly co-wrote “This is What You Came For” and the exposure of her writing-credit (and her handling of that) was supposed to be a major part of the cause of their inevitable break-up.
Following this break-up, Calvin Harris wrote and sang “My Way.” People speculated the robotic girlfriend in the video was a reference to Taylor, and many assumed the track was about the end of their stifling relationship. Which could totally make sense.
But, the timeline. How could they have shot the video for My Way before the break-up, if the video is supposed to be about the break-up? (Do you see why my husband is sick of hearing me talk about this? Crazy-making).
But now that we are on the other end of the Reputation era, rewatching the video is INTERESTING. The video opens with Harris wearing a virtual reality headset. Aka fake reality. Fabricated. We see him watching the girl from a distance, see him watching a show (dance concert?) from a distance, everything is happening with distance. And the song is about doing things on your own terms, not anyone else’s.
Let’s take a look at some of the video details, including parallel aesthetics. Remember, the video for “My Way” was released in Oct 2016. Taylor didn’t kick-off her Rep era until Aug 2017….
Now, if we dig back into “LWYMMD” and “…Ready For It?” we can find other similarities, too. (Read why these lightning bolts/orbs are significant here).
Same goes for images used during the Reputation Tour:
Taylor wore this floral dress below while promoting the launch of ME! and it looks a lot like the wallpaper featured in “My Way.”
Listen, I honestly have no idea if any of this means anything. But you have to admit how wild it is that almost a full year before Taylor kicked off her Rep era we got these images.
My hope, deep-hearted hope, is that they fooled us all. As artists. I hope for years they’ve managed to create a brilliant project behind our backs and it will, as the youths say these days, snatch our wigs to high heaven.
No matter what, even if none of this means anything, I am ready for it.
(And this one below is for the cheap seats, the real friends, in the back YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE)
