Checklist Design is a collection of the best UX practices paired with UI you need to provide a complete, honest and rewarding experience for your users.

With the knowledge of not just what to put on your screen but why it should be there, Checklist aims to build the understanding between the two as a relationship that’s integral to the design process.

What’s the origin story?

I had this idea working at the wonderful agency Mizko Media, where project to project I was building MVP products for Australian tech startups.

No matter how many times I went through the process, there were always small touches and moments that I missed, even when I had just tagged a screen as ‘desktop-FINAL’…

A link here, a back button there — there was always that minor but meaningful piece I would miss to complete the experience.

I discussed this issue with fellow designers, and the need for a checklist of elements for standard pages (login, blog posts, 404 etc) was discovered.

UI elements for a login page

After writing up a few lists for these pages, the idea quickly evolved. It naturally applied to other experiences like buttons and forms. Remembering to design for all states from default to hover to error to focused, to ensure the engineering handover is at its best level of detail for example.

So I started creating a list of features, states and practices for what are defined as ‘Components’ on the website. After sharing with a few people, it was clear that additional content would help round out these pages — a few examples for inspiration, a few articles for validation.

And there we have it. A place to go when you’re not sure you have everything on the page, or you’re missing a small stepping stone in an experience that can snowball into something worse later — Checklist Design is here for you.

I’d like to add that this is still and always be a continued work in progress, and I am open to feedback and suggestions from everyone!

Some improvements I already have on the to-do list coming soon:

  • Expanding ‘Pages’ into another sections called ‘Flows’. I realised that onboarding or cancelling billing for a product may not be on one page, and can involve different types of practice for many reasons. ‘Flows’ feels more accurate to the experience, where the best practices can be revolved around features rather than UI elements.
  • Add more articles to read! I realised in my search that there is so much valuable, interesting content for all these topics. I would hate to only limit the content to 3 articles.

The website is now live, take a look! checklist.design
