Personally, I like looking at redesigns. To me, it makes me think of the function of fanart and fanfiction in developing artists and writers. Working off of an established property allows you to experiment, troubleshoot, and think critically within existing boundaries. In writing fanfiction, you are working with characters with established motives, personalities, and attitudes and a good writer will explore the possibilities of that character while maintaining that tone. Likewise, when you do a redesign, you are critically thinking about an UI that people already use, pinpointing what those issues are, and figuring out innovative ways to improve its usability all while staying within the boundaries of the product’s brand and functionality.
