Day 45

We have come home lately to find the same white horse in our garden helping himself to our bananas and pineapples. Pineapples take 1–2 years to fully develop and this bugger has eaten a majority of what we had planted. Scott and Jason chase him out everytime, but he keeps coming back. Last night I woke to crunching leaves behind my head. It was our hungry friend glowing white under the moonlight sniffing around for some sweet fruit. He took off after we let him know we could see him. But I’m sure he’ll be back. Between this horse and those leaf cutter ants, I have never felt so protective over a garden.

Last night was Sunday. We swam naked around midnight under a sky filled with stars. Black warm waves surprised us, as the moon wasn’t high enough yet to light up the night. Phosphorescence danced all around our bodies, and as I lay floating on my back staring up at the sky, shooting stars fell for me in slow motion. We become children in that water. Belly laughs and expressive movements. Inhibitions are lost and so is thought. Just absolute and perfect presence.

Waking up this morning, we are reminded that we are still at the mercy of the jungle. Scott woke to termites in his bed, I woke to insect bites on my face. I have a huge fat lip and a swollen eyelid. There are two new bee nests right above our beds. And of course, more missing pineapples. I’ve also acquired a strange skin thing on one of my hands… looks like i’m growing algae, like a true mermaid would. Jungle problems, hey. Happy Monday. Our neighbour Linda says people pay a fortune to get a lip like mine. So I’ll own it.

It’s the time of year that water apple trees blossom their bright pink flowers and drop the part of the flower that looks like thick pink pieces of hair. Some parts of the gravel road are completely covered in this fuscia color. At first, we thought it looked like paint splattered all over the road. the middle of the flower looks like a tiny and tight bouquet of pink roses. They are the most darling things of the week.

Jason’s friend Olga arrives tonight. It will be nice to have a lady around.
