the three rules for $1k writers

The title says it all!

I still remember the time when I was in college. I had a magazine that used to feature top authors every Saturday.

I came to know about Neil Gaiman, Stephan King, Stephenie Meyers, and E.L. James through that magazine.

It’s inspiring to read that people do earn money from writing. First, it all started with traditional publishing and now it’s about self-publishing.

No agent. No publisher. You — the author, and the reader.

But if you have noticed that things have changed. Writers have to do most of the work nowadays.

Now, writers are not just someone who will be writing books in the dead of the night. They are social media marketers by day and writers by night.

We are not bound to one publisher or one platform. We now prefer different sources of income.

But at that time, there was one problem with this approach as a newbie.

No one told me how to do it exactly.

Now after so many years and writing books under two niches, I can say that -

If you wanna make a full-time living as an author then follow three rules. Consider this as the entire summary of my entire writing journey.

I have been reading different top articles on the Medium platform for quite some time. I watched and followed YouTube channels where writers are making a full-time income. These were the ones who fall into the $1k to $5k category.

And I have noticed something common between them.

That’s — Three Ms.

Multiple Platforms

Multiple Products

Multiple Ads

This is another name for multiple streams of income.

How exactly to do it?

This is no secret. The only thing you have to do is to watch other writers carefully.

Medium is the best platform for that. Follow a writer and watch what they are doing exactly.

Now a question arises in our mind —

How to find this?

Very simple.

Their articles will reveal all.

Learn from them. Read and read their articles and see what you can find useful. There will be many useful things but you will be able to grab only a few. Only a few. Not all.

Even if the top writers reveal all their secrets still many won’t be able to achieve the level of success they have. Why?

Because what worked for them, does not necessarily mean it will work for you.

You learn. You experiment.

To become successful,

  1. Have many different types of products. Try ebooks, newsletters, templates, and so on, and see what suits you the best. Most probably only a few will work for you, giving you tremendous traffic and sales.
  2. Always and always work on multiple platforms. I am not saying to have ten income streams because that is too time-consuming. If you work alone like me then I always recommend starting with two at least. Three has worked fine although this takes up the weekend as well. I cannot handle more than three income streams. I don’t know if it is possible to handle them individually or not. VA can be a better option in the latter case.
  3. The third thing that you have to keep in mind is running ads. If your target is over $1k then ads are necessary. I have seen some people reaching this goal either because they have worked for an extended period. building followers or they must have used good keywords. But if you want to reach this goal with no followers, then ads are necessary. You can run ads on the marketplace like Amazon or on social media. The top on the list is Facebook ads. Start with small budgets and then slowly increase them.

This is all! As time is passing by, we all are realizing the importance of having more than one income source. After all, this was the first reason why many of us left our 9 to 5 jobs to make a living as a writer. And we can achieve this only if we keep on trying. No stopping until we reach there!

Good luck.
