Gordon Matta-Clark’s “Reality Properties: Fake Estates” (1973)ASSESSMENT TASK 2A: Drawing/Notation : ‘Things of no Concern’ (TNC)

Gordon Matta Clark was an undeniably one of a kind photographer within the time period of the late twentieth century. His desire was to showcase what he believed, that everything could be exceptional. He showed this in his photographing of the small sub-standard Real Estates he purchased in 1973 (Fabrizi, 2014).

Driven to focus his attention on the constantly ongoing dehumanisation of the modern world, Gordon Matta-Clark developed a personal theme for himself in which he combined Minimalism/Surrealism with the old, urban architecture of the time. This manifested from the Anarchitecture (Anarchy + Architecture) movement (which he did not create but simply participate in) which showcased the dissatisfaction of the modern itches of the present-time culture (Attlee, 2007).

Wielding a chainsaw as his instrument and cut into the structures, creating exciting small openings and large incisions into the abandoned real estate buildings he purchased.

I tried to use this notion when looking for a public space to photograph myself. Out of many images that I took, I chose the one below (it was a random worn down building in an alley way) for my final piece because it was exactly the essence of a location where people passed by everyday without noticing twice and something I believe Gordon Matta-Clark would have looked for himself. Due to the obvious fact of not being able to literally use a chainsaw, I had to improvise on what the insides of the building should look like.

H.B Productions (2016)

My drawing was based off two photos I took in an alley near UTS/Chinatown. I took two because there was an obstacle obstructing my view of taking a proper picture. I blended these two photos for information:

My main choice of medium chosen to take the photo was my Iphone 4, but this time I used an accessory to enhance the quality of the photo. I chose a HB pencil after inferring with my teacher upon what style of pencil would have been best.
