One point not made here is that large numbers of illegal Mexican immigrants really give up on the idea of eventually returning home for decades. They come primarily to work and send money back to their families or to assemble a farm or build a house, and somewhere along the way, decide they or their children will have a better life as permanent US residents. Current immigration law severely penalizes this group making it extremely difficult to gain residency without leaving the country and risking their ability to ever return.
