Nutrition is a keystone for mental well-being.

In this article, I’ll explore the relationship between nutrition, the gut-brain axis, and mental health, unveiling practical strategies to nurture your mind through what you consume.

What is Nutrition?

According to the World Health Organization, nutrition is a critical part of health and development. It's more than just eating; it’s the science of providing our bodies with the nutrients necessary for health and growth. This encompasses a mix of macronutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and essential vitamins and minerals that fuel our body and mind.

The Complex Connection between the Gut and the Brain:

One of the scientific discoveries has spotlighted the “gut-brain axis (GBA).” Is a two-way interaction and communication between the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the enteric nervous system (the intrinsic nervous system of the gastrointestinal tract). This communication allows the gut and brain to send and receive signals, influencing various physiological processes, including digestion, mood, behavior, and overall health.

Nutrition Deficiencies and Their Impact on Mental Health:

Poor dietary choices can lead to a host of nutritional deficiencies, some of which have been directly linked to mental health disorders like depression and anxiety.

Did you know that 300 million people have a major depressive disorder? . Food preferences can affect your mental state according to National library of medicine.
