What should Dengue Patients eat?

The most flaming issue surrounding us is the diagnosis and treatment of Dengue in Delhi, which is a mosquito-borne viral disease, causing drastic health loss to the residents. We all read and watch so many things in newspaper and TV on the daily basis that there are many people dying from the Dengue.

The dengue virus can have effects from mild to life-threatening health conditions. The patients who are suffering from symptoms of dengue-like

• Very High fever

• Severe headache

• Joint and muscle Pain

• Pain behind the eye

• Nausea and vomiting

• Constant pain in stomach

The symptom of dengue virus generally begins with the fever of 4–7 days after the virus contained mosquito has bitten you. As there is no medication or treatment options are available in clinical arena specifically for dengue so general recommendations include pain killer and fever controlling medicines, which are the only treatment for dengue.

In Dengue, the patient’s liver is targeted where it becomes difficult to digest heavy, oily and spicy food for the body. The appetite of the patients becomes very low during the fever.

To fight with the Dengue infection, the patients need to improve the immune system through eating the right food. Patients and their families should take care about the diet during and after the dengue fever which helps to heal the body and in fast recovery. Certain foods that are rich in vitamins and nutrients suggested while dealing with this virus, which are

Fluids: Plenty of liquids like orange juices, coconut water, ginger water and ORS water are recommended to keep the body hydrated.

Papaya Leaves: One of the traditional and effective medicine which helps to recover from Dengue is the juice of papaya leaves. 2 tablespoon papaya leaf juices are suggested by the doctors. The diet should also contain green leafy vegetables for better recovery.

Porridge: This is the best food that helps to fight with deadly virus of dengue as it delivers a great amount of energy and also easy to swallow for the patient.

Herbal Tea: The flavour of ginger and cardamom of natural herbal teas, contain antioxidant help to reduce the fever make the patient feel light and energetic.

Protein rich food: Milk, egg and other dairy products must be consumed to battle with this virus. Non-vegetarians can go with the fish and chicken in a good quantity once start recovering from the fever.

Soups: Hot soup intakes will enhance the strength and helps to fight with joint pain. This will also help in increasing the appetite and improve the taste of mouth.

Dengue Prevention

Early detection of dengue not only helps in getting better treatment but also enhance the chances of fast recovery. There are dengue tests or dengue blood tests are recommended to diagnose the virus at an early stage only. As a preventive measure, the exposure to the mosquitoes should be reduced or controlled with following measures:

• Avoid outdoor activities

• Protective clothing with complete covering

• Use mosquito repellent

• Reduce the chances of mosquito breeding

• Stay in well-screened housing

• Avoid water storage at nearby places
