Remembering Mark Sheehan, Lead Guitarist of The Script
Mark Sheehan, best known as a founding member and lead guitarist of Irish pop-rock band The Script, has died at the age of 46 after a brief illness. Sheehan began his music career as a member of short-lived boyband Mytown before embarking on a successful career as a songwriter and producer, working with artists such as Boyz II Men and Britney Spears. Along with childhood friend Danny O’Donoghue and drummer Glen Power, Sheehan formed The Script in 2001, with their debut album, 2008’s “The Script,” reaching the top of the charts in the U.K. and Ireland. The band’s unique sound blended the heavy pop production values of their boyband era with more modern rock arrangements and heavier lyrical subject matter, leading to six albums and a greatest hits compilation.

Originally a dancer, Sheehan was teaching hip-hop dancing when he was recruited into Mytown in the late 1990s. The group launched a single album, “Mytown,” which had modest but promising chart performance. However, infighting at Universal Records derailed plans for a U.S. push, leading Sheehan and O’Donoghue to pursue careers as songwriters and producers. In 2001, they formed The Script, which saw early success in the U.K. and Ireland, propelled by singles like “The Man Who Can’t Be Moved.” The band’s musical origins were clear, blending the heavy pop production values of their boyband era with more modern rock arrangements and heavier lyrical subject matter.

Sheehan was a prolific musician, songwriter, and producer, collaborating with various artists in addition to his work with The Script. Sheehan’s talents led to the band’s success, eventually releasing six albums, including the biggest single in the band’s career, “Hall Of Fame” off of 2012’s “#3.” Sheehan is survived by his wife, Reena, and their three children. The Script announced his death on their official social media accounts.
