Story of Goddess Durga and Navaratri

Once, there was a wicked demon King named Mahishasura. He wanted to be invincible, so he did intense prayers to Lord Brahma. When Brahma appeared, Mahishasura asked to be immortal, never to die. But Brahma explained that everything born must eventually pass away. Mahishasura thought carefully and said if he must go, it should be by a woman’s hand. Brahma agreed.

Feeling unbeatable, Mahishasura attacked humans and Gods. He caused chaos and no one could stop him. The King of the Gods, Indra, sought help from the three main Gods: Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. They created a powerful goddess named Durga, armed with divine weapons. She rode a lion.

When Durga approached, Mahishasura got scared. He asked if a mere woman was challenging him. Durga replied she wasn’t ordinary and was there to fulfill your desire to be killed by a woman. Mahishasura turned into a buffalo and charged at Durga. After a long battle, Durga’s inner strength and weapons defeated him.

So we celebrate Navaratri to have a victory of Good over Evil.
