Daily Wise: Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. — Proverbs 2:2 NLT

Merriam-Webster Definition of TUNE:
3: to adjust with respect to resonance at a particular frequency: such as (a) to adjust (a radio or television receiver) to respond to waves of a particular frequency — often used with in (b) to establish radio contact with

We all want to be wise, don’t we?

If you were presented with two BIG gift boxes and the label on one said Wisdom, and the other said Idiocy, which gift would you choose? (That BIG Idiot gift is a little scary, isn’t it?)

And wouldn’t it be great if you could just go online and reorder a supply of Wisdom when you were running low? Yeah, that would have saved me some painful lessons. I’ve had the gift of Idiot on display a time or two.

Wisdom doesn’t come in a gift box, and you can’t just reorder online, but there is something pretty cool about it.

Wisdom is gettable.

You can get it! And the book of Proverbs is a great place to find it.

Part of “Getting Wisdom” is knowing how to get more of it. (You know, that’s probably true about Idiocy too…)

Proverbs 2:2 tells us two ways to get wisdom.

  • Tune your ears to wisdom
  • Concentrate on understanding

Sounds pretty easy.

Yeah, easy like trying to find the football game on an AM radio station Saturday night. There’s a whole lot of noise out there.

(For those of you who’ve never ventured into the joys of AM radio, you’ll have to use your imagination for this example.)

As I was saying, there’s a lot of noise on an AM receiver.

  • Sometimes you have to finesse the radio dial to get rid of the static.
  • Sometimes you have to move the radio antenna.
  • And sometimes you have to get a little crazy and put tinfoil on the antenna and hold it against the window while sticking your tongue out, holding your left foot in the air.

A little crazy, sure. But you want to catch the game, right?

It’s the same with wisdom.

There’s a lot of noise out there.

Sometimes you need to move the dial a bit so you can tune out the mindless chatter.
Sometimes you have to move the radio antenna in a better direction.
And sometimes you have to get the tinfoil out. You have to take the extra steps, put some effort into it.

Tuning In

Scroll up to the top and read Proverbs 2:2 and that Merriam-Webster definition again. Then, consider how you might tune into wisdom (make some adjustments, hone in).

Wisdom is broadcasting, sending out the signal. Are you listening?
