Here are 6 other things to know about me:
1) When I was in the 7th grade, one girl wrote, " I've never met anyone so opinionated" in my yearbook and I took it as a compliment. (Yes, I'm a fire sign.) My dad would eventually tell me he was not so sure it was supposed to be a compliment.
2) When I was 17, I won a creative writing competition that is held annually for local schools. I wasn't the overall winner, but I won in my category or something. I distinctly remember my English teacher telling me "You beat girls from The Study!" The Study is a private all-girls school, and I went to a public school. My teacher sounded more excited about me beating out private school kids than anything else, and I find that very funny and charming. I liked this teacher a great deal, and yet I still subjected her to book reports on nothing but Anne Rice vampire content for three whole terms.
3) Another story from high school that serves as both a humble brag and a warning: While I was in the AP English class of the aforementioned teacher, it was a continual struggle to get any of the other kids to peer edit my stuff when it was peer editing time because I always wrote 7 million pages and 20 million words. I bet you're surprised to learn this as you read through the very longest About page on all of Medium.
4) When I was 22, I worked at American Apparel and saw Dov Charney at least twice. I was right there when he asked the staff to pitch ideas for new products, and one guy said "Pocket squares."
5) When I still had a profile on OkCupid, my username was the name of a Babes in Toyland song and was truly awful (I dare you to guess which song it was.) I'd settled on this, exhaustedly, after it seemed like every other possible username in existence was already taken. Additionally, there was once a version of my profile that was just a paragraph of me discussing the gunfight sex scene in Nic Cage's Drive Angry . Somehow, I have been in a healthy and loving relationship for 8 years with a man I met on that dating website.
6) For nearly 2 years, I was the scriptwriter for a mobile porn game that featured a dark wizard, aliens, pirates, demons, time travel and more lewd puns than you'll ever imagine. This was my very first professional writing experience and the only writing (so far) that I've ever made money from. It was a genuinely great time, and I wish the game was still operational. Hot monster girls from abyssal realms are my happy place.
