A Proud Connors Mom
This is the second in a five-part series highlighting stories of parents’ experiences in the Hoboken Public Schools Kindergarten program at the four schools in the district. These stories are published in conjunction with the Kindergarten Visitation Days happening through the month of February at the various schools.

My son, Jackson (Kindergarten), had previously attended private school for Pre-K3 and Pre-K4. However, after hearing great things about the Hoboken school system, we decided to move our son to public school. We had missed the open house tours in February last year and when we learned Jackson had been placed at Thomas Connors Elementary School, we quickly called the school and asked for a private tour. The staff members were very warm and welcoming from the moment I stepped through the doors. After my tour, I learned that Connors has access to more resources than my son’s former private school, including a new computer lab, where children learn different tools on iPads, power point presentations, and excel spreadsheets. Additionally, children were benefiting from positive behavior with their Connors Cares (PBSIS initiative).
I cannot say enough great things about my family’s experience with Thomas Connors and their team. From the moment you walk through the front doors to the moment you pick up your child, you’re greeted by a warm smile and a friendly security guard who walks your child to the gym or classroom or the Family Friendly teachers. Connors consists of a very tight knit community that gives children one on one attention throughout the year. We have noticed a huge improvement in our son’s reading, writing, math and his art. They have far exceeded our expectations.
Connors hosts a “Family Friendly” after-school program that goes till 5PM and is free to public school children. It allows children to work on their homework, get extra tutoring from teachers, be active in the gym, and have extra time in the library or in their new computer lab. My son really looks forward to Family Friendly.
Principal Gerald Fitzhugh, his team, and all the programs that are offered have gone above and beyond to make sure my son is challenged, cared for, and protected. Thomas Connors is Hoboken’s best kept secret, and I was fortunate to get my son in before the word gets out!
