Thoughts on “Autism Parents”

As the mother of a now adult autistic daughter I am going through my own diagnosis. One of the most important things I learned was never to tell her story. It’s crucial to keep private the struggles and concerns of our children and not to make them public for our own sympathy or support. There were many times I had no idea what to do and support would have been very helpful, talking to others who knew about what my daughter was struggling with, but I am so thankful I trusted my gut and never used her struggles to find sympathy and support. It’s very tempting when you’re knee deep in it all, but I would encourage all parents to remember that their child knows and grows and will one day resent their private pain being used in public forums. Great thoughts Emma!
