The story then shifts to the summer of 1980, when Lara is a young woman in her early twenties. She is cast in a summer stock production of Our Town at Tom Lake, a theater company in Northern Michigan. There, she meets Peter Duke, a charming and handsome actor who is playing the role of George Gibbs. Lara and Peter fall in love, but their relationship is complicated by the fact that Peter is already married.

Peter and Lara’s affair continues for the summer, but it eventually comes to an end when Peter returns to Los Angeles to resume his career. Lara is heartbroken, but she eventually moves on with her life and marries another man.

The novel returns to the present day, where Lara’s daughters are still eager to hear the story of Peter Duke. Lara tells them the story, and they are fascinated by it. However, they are also troubled by the fact that their mother had an affair with a married man.

The novel ends with Lara and her daughters coming to terms with the past. They realize that even though Peter Duke was a flawed man, he was also a great love in Lara’s life. They also realize that the affair had a profound impact on Lara, and that it helped to shape the woman she is today.
