8 weeks, 19,000 test accounts, and 40,000 globally-initiated transactions later, our team of Master Architects at Heir have completed our in-depth systematic Stellar.org platform testing initiative. In this article we spell out the what, why, how, and our results. Our main goals which prompted us to embark on this journey was three-fold:

  1. Identify the ideal blockchain platform to build Heir’s upcoming flagship product and suite of services, using objective data gathered from proper solution-fit testing.
  2. Ensure the platform selected will deliver the required service-level for our Heir to thrive from a global standpoint.
  3. Ensure the platform selected will work in a symbiotic relationship with Heir’s own functional, technical, and business requirements.

A Quick Recap of Our Previous Phase of Testing

On Sunday, March 25th, Heir successfully executed a load test on Stellar’s test network by triggering over 11,000 individual transactions simultaneously, involving 11,000 separate accounts. The assumption was made that if the limited number test network nodes (3 in total) can handle a mass-volume of transactions successfully, then Stellar’s public network should be able to deliver even better results. The load test, which culminated in the flawless processing of all 11,000 transactions in less than 10 seconds, left the team at Heir both impressed and excited.

In addition to our load test, Heir successfully completed solution-fit/functional testing of the various operation commands provided by the Stellar platform to mutate their ledger. Our team validated that when combined and used in a unique and novel method, Stellar’s advanced operations fulfills the necessary blockchain-centric functional requirements of our upcoming flagship product. Simply put, Stellar provides Heir with the exact building blocks required to build our solution.

Although the results of our load and functional tests had us confident that Stellar’s network delivers exceptional results, Heir’s team decided to push forward with two additional test phases to build unwavering confidence in Stellar’s network. This included the following two phases:

Phase 2: Mimicking Anticipated User Behavior Using a Constant Stream of Transactions

Over the past weeks, our Master Architects at Heir worked diligently to automate a constant stream of Stellar transactions, pushed to the network at various transaction per second (TPS) bursts ranging anywhere up to 20 TPS. Executing our test required precise pre-planning and technical legwork, including: development using Amazon’s global cloud (AWS), DevOps pipeline, and a hyper-cluster of managed docker containers in conjunction with AWS serverless architecture. For our technical savvy friends and followers, our efforts culminated in building out the following technical design:

Put in layman terms, we were able to harness the power of advanced cloud services and infrastructure to mimic our anticipated future users’ activity. By pushing transactions to Stellar’s network in accordance to how our future product and services will integrate/work with the network, we were able to evaluate whether Stellar’s network performance falls within bounds of our requirements. The results we observed were as follows:

  • TPS Submission Velocity: Up to 20 TPS
  • Push Duration @ TPS Submission Velocity: Multiple constant duration's lasting upwards of 10 hours
  • Transaction Process Results: PASS — All transactions processed successfully during all test runs, with no network failure

Phase 3: Testing Stellar’s Network Globally Using Amazon’s Global Cloud Infrastructure

As Heir intends to deliver a product for a global audience, our last blockchain platform test involved testing Stellar’s network from a global standpoint. To accomplish our goal, our certified cloud architects leveraged Amazon’s global cloud infrastructure to launch tests from various parts of the globe including: North and South America, Asia-Pacific, and Europe.

Heir’s Phase 3 Stellar network test consisted of re-purposing our Phase 2 test, but this time from a global standpoint instead of a single geographical region. The results we observed were as follows:

  • TPS Submission Velocity: Up to 20 TPS
  • Push Duration @ TPS Submission Velocity: Multiple constant duration’s lasting upwards of 10 hours
  • Transaction Process Results:
  • North America: PASS
  • South America: PASS
  • Asia-Pacific: PASS
  • Europe: PASS

*Pass indicates that all transactions submitted to the Stellar network were processed successfully, with no observed network failure.

In summary, all transactions submitted during our test from different corners of the world, were processed with no network failure encountered. Submission-to-ledger recording time — a critical service level metric for Heir’s upcoming product — was additionally observed to be well within the bounds of what Heir requires.

Heir’s Blockchain Platform Selection Decision

The successful execution and results observed throughout Heir’s in-depth and multi-phase testing initiative has:

  1. Proven to the team at Heir that Stellar’s network will function in accordance to our product’s functional, technical and business requirements.
  2. Instilled complete-confidence that our upcoming product’s necessary service level, will not be throttled by Stellar’s speed, availability, or scalability.
  3. Demonstrated, without issue, that Stellar can handle the needs of a global user-base and allows for truly borderless products to be built.

With the above being said, Heir is beyond excited to announce that we have selected Stellar’s platform to bring our product’s vision to reality. The team at Heir is fully-confident that Stellar will serve the needs of our future-users and will allow for Heir’s upcoming products and offerings to thrive.

It’s Official: Heir will be built on the Stellar platform
