The Best Reviewed Games of 2020

Geoff Keighley has grown The Game Awards so much through the years, effectively making it the Oscars of gaming. The growing lavishness means even more opportunities for exciting new reveals, and according to Keighley, we’ll have a solid 12–15 new game reveals during this year’s showcase.

In a recent Reddit AMA (Ask Me Anything), Keighley answered a few questions about the showcase kicking off on December 10. Among the questions answered were ones centered around new game releases. With five reveals slated for the pre-show, the producer gave a tentative confirmation of “I think around 12–15 or so?” when talking about main showcase announcements.

He confirmed later on Twitter that these announcements are specifically about brand new titles that have not been revealed at all, so no bait in switches regarding if this is something previously confirmed and just new information.

The Game Awards always shares first looks at new games, which is exciting for those that can’t wait to see what the upcoming year will bring. I know, for me personally, I’m really excited to see what BioWare has to show regarding Dragon Age 4 now that a showing is confirmed. Red lyrium, magisters, Egg Boy, yada yada yada.

Just like last year, the pre-show will offer a few World Premieres, this year housing five special reveals. There will also be a musical performance by Lyn Inaizumi for Persona 5 as well, which a lot of fans have aired their excitement over.

The pre-show itself kicks off at 3:30 PM PT on December 10 with the main showcase following soon after. It will be interesting to see how the show rolls out this year, especially given the COVID-19 restrictions that are still in place.

Geoff Keighley’s annual video game awards show, The Game Awards, will broadcast live on Thursday, Dec. 10, starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT. The main event starts at 7 p.m. EST/4 p.m. PST, following a 30-minute pre-show.

You can watch this year’s show right here, via YouTube. The Game Awards 2020 will also stream live on Twitch, Facebook Live, Twitter, Steam, and other platforms.

This year’s edition of The Game Awards promises new game reveals — “around 12–15 or so,” Keighley said in a recent AMA session on Reddit. While many are still secret, there are some known reveals: We’ll get a new look at BioWare’s next Dragon Age game, a preview of Among Us’ new map, gameplay from Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War and Warzone season 1, and something new from Striking Distance, the studio founded at PUBG Corp. by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield.

The Game Awards will also include, you know, awards. (Here are this year’s nominees.) Presenters and performers scheduled to appear tonight include Gal Gadot, Tom Holland, Brie Larson, Reggie Fils-Aime, The Muppets, Stephen A. Smith, Troy Baker, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder, Christopher Nolan, and Keanu Reeves.

What better way to finish off 2020 than with a bunch of new game announcements? That’s what you can expect when you watch The Game Awards, hosted by Geoff Keighley. As the name implies, it’s also when individuals and companies receive accolades for their work in making the best games of the year. It’ll be hard to top last year’s unveiling of the Xbox Series X, but there should still be a few surprises we won’t see coming.

Unlike in years past, this event is online only, so there won’t be any attendees. That should speed up the doling out of awards, making way for the game announcements. It’s what we’re all watching for, right? Here’s how you can tune in.

WHEN DO THE GAME AWARDS START?
It’s all happening on Thursday, December 10th. You can tune in right a 7PM ET / 4PM PT if you don’t want to see any of the pre-show. Arrive a half-hour early if you do.

WHERE CAN I WATCH THE GAME AWARDS?
The better question is where can you not watch the Game Awards? The ceremony / conference is happening on YouTube (which is where you’ll want to watch for the exclusive 4K HDR stream) as well as Twitch, Twitter, Facebook Live, and many more places. You can watch it in Steam or through Oculus Venues if you feel like watching it in VR. If you live outside of the US, here’s where the Game Awards will stream in your region.

Show creator Geoff Keighley said that the theme of the 2020 show was about strength and comfort, given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry and on players. Keighley also wanted to implore the theme of unity, similar to The Game Awards 2018 which had led with Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aimé, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, and Sony’s Shawn Layden all sharing the stage, given the release of the next generation of home consoles in November 2020.[1] The event will feature a pre-show hosted by Sydnee Goodman[2] and will feature several guests as award presenters, such as former Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aimé,[3] sports host Stephen A. Smith,[4] and actors Brie Larson,[5] Gal Gadot,[6] Troy Baker,[7] Nolan North,[8], Keanu Reeves and John David Washington.[9]

Due to the pandemic, Keighley did not want to host a normal ceremony for the 2020 show and instead worked with his partners to develop a virtual show. The show will use three soundstages in Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo. At each locale, there will be only minimal attendees, mostly related to production crew and presenters. Keighley states this still allows them to include additional presentation events as with past shows, as well as explore taking the Game Awards to different venues in the future.[10][11] As with past shows, the presentation will be live streamed across 45 different platforms and be associated with sales on various game digital storefronts.[12]
