If the hours are needed to get something done then they’re not pointless. At my last job we had an annual hour requirement that worked out to around 45 hours a week. Not awful, but that was the minimum. If you wanted to even be considered for a bonus you had to log more. My boss there told me they wanted to ‘create a culture of people who worked a lot.’ Instead they created a culture of people who resented the hours they had to be in the office when the workload didn’t support it. And that led to high turnover and an employee base of young and middle aged men who had wives they expected to take care of their lives outside of work.
