Why Switch?

The idea behind Switch started from a simple investigation by our founder I. Christwin, to why power outages occur so frequently in Nigeria. What he found from that investigation was the story of a complex, worn down electrical delivery system called The Grid.

The Grid, by the nature of its complexity, is a fragile and inefficient machine, that requires huge capital investments for its improvement, extension and upkeep. And is most often, the subject of intense bureaucracy and corruption.

However, our most interesting discovery about our grid is that grid engineers have no straightforward way to detect issues like phase failures, overloads, brownouts and vandalism. After sharing this discovery, we began thinking of how we could help grid operators obtain complete awareness of the state of our grid.

This led us to build an IoT device that could monitor and collect data about the operations of electric delivery equipment, along with an analytic dashboard for converting this data to insights. Our system can detect common distribution problems such as energy theft, overload conditions, voltage anomalies and power interruptions. It also has the ability to forecast electricity demand, predict system failures and identify its root causes.

But this merely scratches the surface of what Switch can do. We’re very excited to finally launch our Platform-as-a-Service. This was developed specifically for renewable energy companies searching for a quick and smart way to monitor and manage their projects remotely.
