How Design Thinking was used in the design and construction of a national memorial in Singapore.

This is Part 2 of a 3-part series on the Founders’ Memorial. Read Part 1 here.

Our team was truly honoured to be involved in Phase 2 and Phase 3 of this journey and we will illustrate the Design Thinking methods used to drive this unique project. For ease of understanding and standardisation of naming convention, the methods mentioned and explained can be referenced from the book, “Universal Methods of Design” by Bella Martin and Bruce Hanington. It is a great book that succinctly recommends design and research methods that are applicable to any project.

Phase 2: Co-creation Workshops

Phase 2 public engagements took place from September 2016 to February 2017, focusing on the desired visitor experience, programmes, physical features, as well as site options for the Founders’ memorial. We worked with the Design Innovation team from SUTD-MIT International Design Centre (IDC) to design and deliver a workshop process to allow the public to prototype their vision for the memorial.
