In the interior of the Niger Coast Protectorate, there was an ancient unexplored kingdom. It constituted an area of approximately 4,000 square miles and was not yet under the British administration or trade, even though the British claimed their sphere as part of influence following the Berlin West Africa conference of 1885. In the 13th to 19th Century, it was a Mega community and one of the most socially and politically sophisticated polities all over precolonial Africa.
