First Step To Finding ‘Health’

If you’re worried that this post is going to discourage you from eating pizza, tell you to workout more, or implement a meditation routine STAT — fear not, it won’t. The goal here is to bring you a new perspective of the definition of health and some tools to help you feel great and find your own way to ‘health’.
But first, let’s level set on what ‘health’ is. We hear this word all the time — especially in a culture where the wellness industry is booming and even Facebook admits that too much time on social media isn’t great. But what is ‘health’? And why care?
According to Google health is “the state of being free from illness or injury”
According to Merriam-Webster it is “the condition of being sound in body, mind, or spirit”
And according to Urban Dictionary it is “the slowest possible rate at which one can die”
All valid definitions. But do you ever feel like this word has become so over complicated, it’s tough to know where to start? You aren’t alone. If anyone was challenged to make diet decisions based on all of the food related documentaries on Netflix, they might resolve to never eat again. And that’s not ideal.
At the Institute of Integrative Nutrition they teach a theory called “Bio-Individuality”. The meaning is simple, no two bodies are the same so no two bodies respond to things in the same way. Bio-individuality encourages us to read the information that we find appealing, to test new theories that sounds interesting, and then to keep what works for us and toss what doesn’t. Just because it worked for XYZ goopy person, doesn’t mean it’s the exact answer for you. So let yourself off the hook.
The Institute of Integrative Nutrition also teaches us that health is never the end goal. Health is simply the vehicle to take you to where you want to go.
So after you read there, here is what you should do:
Take 5 minutes to set the record straight -
What does health mean to you?
Where do you want your health to take you?
That is the first step to taking control of your health, is understanding what health is to you. Take power in your own knowing and awareness. Don’t let anyone speak over your intuition.
