What Is A Retreat?

The original definition of the word ‘retreat’ is to ‘withdraw’ — and the modern retreat allows you to do exactly that. Most retreats provide time and space for you to step back from day to day life and focus on yourself, whether that involves simply allowing yourself to relax and forget all usual responsibilities or focus on a specific goal.

There is a vast range of retreats available and the term can cover anything from a weekend of no mobile phone (often referred to as a ‘digital detox’) to a week or more of relaxation in a beautiful, natural setting (often labelled ‘Wellness’ or ‘Mindfulness’ retreats) or the learning of specific skill (for example on a Yoga or Surf retreat). Retreats can be used to kick-start new fitness regimes, relieve stress, practice meditation, participate in outdoor leisure activities, explore your creativity or improve sleep.

The good news is that retreats are generally less outrageously expensive than is commonly thought, with some retreats even offering free stays in return for participation in cooking or cleaning during the week. They are also more tailored to guests preferences than often perceived, so don’t worry, you don’t have to do sunrise yoga every morning if you don’t want to!

How Long Are Typical Retreats?

Retreat lengths vary from . Most people think retreats are several day trips, however, you could most certainly find a spa day retreat or even half-day for a quick time out in the middle of busy work week. A weekend retreat could be anything from one overnight to two, and could involve a couple of classes a day, some talks and conversations, treatments, use of spa facilities, meals, and perhaps relaxing group activities. Don’t worry about getting your money’s worth because the schedule will be full, but there will of course be the option to opt out of any activity you wish. For retreaters hoping to hit specific health goals, such as weight loss or improved general health, we recommend at least a week or more to start to see serious results.

What Types Of Retreats Are There?

Believe it or not, retreats come in all shapes and sizes. The Good Index categorises all retreats to make it a little easier to understand and explore:

What Kind Of People Go On Retreats?

There is not just one type! Retreaters come in all shapes, sizes and ages with very different personality types. They range from physically fit to the chronically unwell, and everything in between. Whatever your goal, personality or fitness level, the right retreat will exist for you.
