I attended an event organized by UXPA Pratt this week. The guest Chantal Gagnon is the Innovation lead at Salesforce.org. It was an interesting talk leaving plenty of food for thought on how we can use design thinking in startups.

She used Two Diamond Model to demonstrate the design process.

Two Diamond Model

An interesting metaphor is that ideas are like seeds planted in the greenhouse, and we should sow as many seeds as we can. Because we never know which seed can grow up as a plant. At this time, quantity is more important than quality.

Then she talked about how to understand people. She highly recommends that we should talk to people directly. A small tip when talking with people is to ask Why 5 times on a topic. This is, I think, the most interesting part of this talk. She started asking a volunteer whether she went to gym and continuously asked question after getting her answers. So we got a lot of details about this volunteer’s behavior, such as she wants to be productive and the way she arranges her tasks. When it comes to Ideate, she used the invention of Velcro as an example to explain analogy thinking which can be used when we generate the ideas of our company.

I think the content she shared is very useful. Some tips she gave us are really doable. To be honest, this was my first time to attend such event and I was so excited to listen to a professional shared her own experience. Thanks for UXPA Pratt to give me this opportunity.
