On the evening of Friday, May 17th, we quietly opened pre-sales for Cheeze Wizards, the newest game from Dapper Labs.

Revealing the pre-sale

The first folks to find out about the pre-sale were a group of individuals we refer to as “The Nifty Fifty.” These were the fifty folks at the top of the Cheeze Wizards waitlist and they’ve been an incredible source of feedback for our initial considerations and testing.

Finding your most engaged product evangelists is step one in the Axiom Zen playbook for building products. Engaging them, again and again, is step two. This approach is why mainstream products like ZenHub and seemingly-insane ideas like CryptoKitties have both succeeded despite their different audiences.

Afterwards, the rest of the Cheeze Wizards waitlist was given a heads up on the pre-sale. Just before we went live, Dapper users got the details too, followed by a highly-engaged segment of the CryptoKitties community.

When pre-sales went live, the news almost immediately leaked, and 2019 Eth New York conference attendees, supported by our team on the ground, began to summon Wizards. Players from around the world began to quickly follow suit.

The weeklong pre-sale

Cheeze Wizard pre-sales started the evening of Friday, May 17th, and they ran for roughly a week, closing on Friday, May 24th when block 7827631 got mined.

Unfortunately, there’s no accurate way to know exactly when specific blocks get mined, so planning marketing efforts around the end of the pre-sale was difficult. Because it’s explicitly tied to the smart contract, we can’t modify the timeline once we go live — it’s a challenge, but one that showcases the universal fairness and transparent rules blockchain products are uniquely subject to, so we’re happy to contend with it.

Over the weeklong pre-sale…

  • A total of 4,740 wizards were summoned
  • Over 1,013 ETH in sales occurred
  • The Big Cheeze prize grew to 606.7 ETH
  • All five side quests, with 116.675 ETH and five Founder Cheeze Wizards as rewards, were unlocked; these are in addition to the Big Cheeze grand prize

The ether numbers aren’t the most exciting metric, though. Over the course of seven days, multiple independently-developed projects and tools were created.

There’s no cheese party like third-party extensibility

Each Cheeze Wizard is designed for extensibility, creating new value and experiences for players by empowering independent creators and third-party developers to make their own cheezy tools, projects, and features.

Since the pre-sale began, the following tools and projects were developed:

Shortly after the pre-sale began, so too did the collectors market. Wizards began appearing in secondary markets like OpenSea and selling upwards of 6 ETH because they boasted particularly rare items.

Cats and Wizards are interoperable

Interoperability — the ability for a digital asset to have utility across multiple experiences — is one of the most exciting things about blockchain-based products, so of course it’s something CryptoKitties players can try in Cheeze Wizards.

Meet Curdlin.

Curdlin, one of the newest Fancy Cats in CryptoKitties, will do something neat in Cheeze Wizards. There’s also a Founder Giveaway for folks who have a Curdlin.

You can learn more about Curdlin here.

Experience the magic for yourself!

The inaugural Cheeze Wizards tournament begins this summer, and at the end of the tournament, one Wizard gains the honour and ether of the Big Cheeze.

To make sure you’re the first to find out when you can summon Wizards again, just sign up for Cheeze Wizards!
