Your .NYC website is up and running, but now what?

You know need something meaningful on your homepage or About Us page to greet your readers. Buuuut formal company mission statements feel rigid and antiquated. What if you could quickly write one, strong sentence for your website to immediately explain what you’re about? Now you can. Use the simple formula below to write a short mission statement for your .NYC website:

“At [COMPANY NAME], it’s our mission to help [TARGET CUSTOMER] do / achieve / reach / eliminate / reduce [HAPPINESS/PAIN] by providing [A BENEFICIAL OUTCOME].”

In the two minutes before your eyes glaze over, let’s break down the pieces of this formula:

Company Name: This one is pretty obvious, because it’s the name of your company. If you don’t have a name, use Acme as a placeholder.

Target Customer: These are the users of your product or service. Picture your ideal customers. Describe the group in detail with a phrase like, “frazzled university professors.” Doing this helps your potential users identify themselves right away.

Do/Achieve/Reach/Eliminate/Reduce + Happiness or Pain: There are two primary ways your product or service affects your customers. You either increase their happiness, or you reduce their pain.

Ask yourself: What does my company help people do or stop doing? Think about how current customers describe your company. What do they say? Is it something like, “Acme transformed the way I organize my students’ grades. I spend less time duplicating my handwritten records.” Make note of statements this.

Beneficial Outcome: Think about the biggest benefit you promise will happen as a result of using your product or service. This is a strong way to end your mission statement. If you’re not sure about the benefits, again, listen to your customers. They’ll be happy to tell you.

Now, let’s a look at the formula once it’s pieced together:

“At Acme, it’s our mission to help frazzled university professors reduce the time they spend hunched over handwritten records, calculating grades by providing easy-to-use apps that transform student performance data into gorgeous infographics.”

There you have it. Feel free to add words as needed to make this formula true and coherent for your business. Working through the exercise gives you a strong, welcoming mission statement. Help your potential customers know that they’ve landed on the right website.
