There are many religions prevailing in India, a secular country. But one religion brings us all together, Cricket. For ages, Cricket has been the number 1 sport in the nation ruling the hearts of more than 1.25 billion Indians.

Since the advent of T20, the entire face of the cricketing world has changed. T20 cricket leagues have sprouted up like mushrooms all around the world in the form of the KFC Big Bash League, the Natwest Blast, the CPL etc. However, the most prominent one among the entire lot is the Indian Premier League (IPL).

India won the T20 World Cup in 2007 and the formation of ICL in India fast forwarded the formation of the IPL. Since ICL was not recognised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), businessman Lalit Modi was tasked to create a franchise based T20 league which would rival the ICL and it would be one of a kind. Eventually, the IPL was born.

Fast forward 10 years and we have reached the much-awaited 10th season. In these last 10 years we have seen some changes, and boy, on what magnitude have they been.

The IPL has galvanised the entire nation into a single community. We have seen the rise of various young, budding players and also a decline of a fair few. The IPL brought along all our favourite warriors on one battle field. Brendon McCullum saw to it that the IPL had a good opening. Scoring the first century of the IPL history, he set the tone for the entire tournament and the future seasons as well. Today, the IPL is the most attended cricket league in the world and it ranks 6th among all sports leagues.

Besides adrenaline filled action, it has also faced a fair share of controversies. But if we look past them we can actually see how the IPL has brought forth a melting pot of talent. With the new form of the game, a new breed of players have been developed to cater to the needs of the T20 format. Technically gifted players have come to the forefront and performed very specific functions for their respective teams. They fit in like a piece of the jigsaw puzzle that the team requires to complete the entire picture.

The IPL is not only about the money, it’s one of the best platforms to perform at the highest levels with international players. The young guns develop their game under the watchful eyes of experienced coaches and are honed and drilled to perform their roles better. International players like AB de Villiers, Chris Gayle, Sunil Narine and Mitchell Johnson are nothing short of role models in the game. Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya and of course the captain fantastic Virat Kohli have broken the ranks and used the IPL as a stepping stone to greatness.

With the rise of the new generation, the IPL fits perfectly with the lives of the young and the bold. Nail biting finishes, smashing the leather ball around and the sweet sound of the ball hitting the stumps is what every cricket fan in India hopes to watch when the IPL is around the corner.
