‘A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes’ — Mark Twain

I commend you for taking this initiative to promote the cause that is dear to you, and one which is dear to me personally as well, as a concerned individual, and as a meetup co-organizer — #DevTO being one of them.
I find it interesting that you chose to pick a very small subset of #DevTO meetups considering we have data available for the last 5+ yrs. Might you let us know why? #DevTO has made considerable strides in looking at all opportunities to address the need for diversity in our panels and will continue to carry the torch. One such initiative was our IWD Talks which has been extremely well received.
Are there bumps along the way? You bet. But we’ve done great work and will continue to do so despite this salvo of accusations you send from a distance via this advertorial dressed as a Medium post.
I also find it odd that you’ve yet to attend our events (at least, you keep declining the RSVPs), and/or you’ve not introduced yourself to any of us (not in person or email), to possibly expand on this conversation which is seemingly your raison d’être.
Where I’m from, we call this Monday morning quarterbacking: you look around, and when it’s all done, tweet at whoever will listen a compendium of our calamitous meetup. Ok.
Renown and award winning accessibility advocate and developer Marcy Sutton found herself in a sea of condemnatory comments and tweets on how sites were failing at #a11y compliance. Instead of joining the peanut gallery, she launched Accessibility Wins (https://a11ywins.tumblr.com) to highlight the good and strides sites were making in becoming compliant.
Instead of mirroring Donald Trump and highlighting the doom and gloom in the lack of diversity in meetups, crowing how you’re the saviour, how about turning that frown upside down, and offer to provide help and council to those who need it most — and attending their meetups to start. I predict you will make greater headway.
Despite all of that, the door remains open to attend any of our #DevTO meetups and even discuss with us in an open forum what you think a course of action should be in this community we serve and love. We at #DevTO have charted our course, and are excited about our diversity travels.
