Henry Comte Velasquez — Understanding The Different Types Of Lawyers

Like most professional industries, the legal field has a wide variety of specializations and different types of law. Attorneys typically choose one area of law and might specialize in certain kinds of cases from there. Any business or individual should have a basic understanding of what the different types of lawyers do so they are best equipped to seek legal help when needed.

Defense Attorneys

Perhaps the most common type of attorney depicted in media, defense attorneys defend clients from charges brought against them. Defense attorneys can specialize in either civil or criminal cases. They may also work for the state as public defenders for defendants who cannot afford legal representation.

Prosecuting Attorneys

Prosecuting attorneys serve in the opposite role as defense attorneys. They are responsible for bringing cases against someone accused of breaking the law. Prosecuting attorneys almost always work for local, state and federal attorney departments.

Family Lawyers

Family lawyers handle domestic legal issues such as adoptions, divorces, custody disputes, child support, marriages and prenuptial agreements, the emancipation of minors and more. Family law can sometimes include wills and estate planning, but sometimes those topics are handled by specialized family planning lawyers.

Business Attorneys

A business lawyer specializes in business law and may assist business owners with starting a new company, mergers, managing or dissolving a business entity. Business attorneys may also help small business owners navigate succession when it comes time to retire and pass the business along to someone else.

Personal Injury Attorneys

Personal injury attorneys help clients receive damages in court for injuries that were caused by another party’s malice or neglect. Personal injury attorneys might specialize in worker’s compensation cases, where employees who were injured at work seek damages from their employer.

Financial Lawyers

Lawyers also specialize in areas of law dealing with financial matters. For example, a tax attorney helps business owners understand their tax obligations and supports them in any disputes with the IRS or state taxation agencies. For individuals or businesses struggling financially, there are also bankruptcy lawyers.

Other Types

These are only some of the most common types of lawyers. There are also immigration lawyers, environmental lawyers, real estate lawyers, intellectual property lawyers, and others. No matter the issue, there is a field of law and specialized professionals within it to handle legal matters.
