What is Anaconda?

Anaconda® is a package and environment manager used for data science and scientific computing distributions, including many common open-source machine learning packages. The Anaconda Python distribution allows for an easy installation process of Python and the Jupyter Notebook.

Instructions for Installing Anaconda

This guide is to provide you with a quick and easy to follow walkthrough on the installation process of the Anaconda Python distribution platform on your local desktop computer or laptop. Click here to go to Anaconda.com to download.

1. Click the Download button

Anaconda is compatible with Windows, macOS, and multiple different Linux distributions. If you need a specific version of Anaconda you can find a list of all the current releases towards the bottom of the page, as well as an archive of previous version releases. The download should only take about 10 seconds to complete.

2. Click the Downloaded Anaconda3.exe file

Allow the program to make changes to your computer. Run as an administrator if necessary. The executable file will bring up the Anaconda3 Setup Installer.

3. Click Next on the Anaconda3 Setup Installer

The installation setup process for Anaconda3 will begin. Click next to move onto the license agreement.

4. Accept the License Agreement

Accept the terms of agreement to install Anaconda3 by clicking I Agree.

5. Select Install for all users

This will give access and install Anaconda3 for all users on your local desktop computer or laptop. Requires you to give administrator privileges. Click the next button.

6. Choose the Installation Destination Folder for Anaconda3

Select the directory where you wish to install Anaconda3. You can leave this as the default file path which it recommends and click next to move onto more installation options. You will most likely not need to change the location unless you feel that it is necessary to place the folder somewhere else.

7. Select the Advanced Installation Options

I would recommend to make sure that both of the settings are unchecked before installation. You may also leave these settings as the default options provided by the installer if you want the Anaconda3 Python distribution to be automatically recognized by IDEs. Click the next button.

8. The Installer will Download the Package Files

The installer will begin to download all necessary package files to your local machine.

9. The Installation will Complete

Once the package files are completely installed, click the next button.

10. The Anaconda3 Setup Installer will recommend the PyCharm IDE

If you would like instructions on downloading the PyCharm IDE or are curious what an IDE is click here.

11. Click Finish After the Installation Process Completes

Click finish to complete the installation process and exit the installer. You may leave the tool boxes selected if you want to view the recommended resources. If you need more information on the installation process, please refer to the documentation provided by Anaconda.com.
