Here’s The Early Pick for Album of Summer 2014

Song of The Summer Debates Be Gone!

The Song of Summer 2014 battle is a snoozer. When it comes down to which Iggy Azalea collaborator one prefers, Ariana Grande or Charli XCX, I bow out.

Instead, I’m preoccupied with The Album of The Summer. The album I’d throw on a car stereo and just let it ride, front to back. Something befitting of this horribly hot summer. And don’t worry, it sounds like I’m going to get existential, and declare a stance against the partying spirit, I’m not here to be a killjoy.

To pull a John Oliver, I can promise you a youtube video featuring a cat, by the time you’re done with this post.

But before we get there, let me reveal my (preliminary) pick for album of the summer.

The unfortunately beset by quotation marks ““Sunbathing Animal”,” by Parquet Courts, is just what the season requires. It came out on June 3, but almost feels timeless. You can listen to it below, via Spotify:

If you’re not familiar from their last album Light Up Gold, Parquet Courts are from Brooklyn, and thankfully album doesn’t reek of it. The sound at times feels of the west coast, of dust, of roadside pitstops. It’s not of a modern movement, but is driven by a familiar-to-today paranoid energy.

With the exception of a memorable chorus here and there—i.e. “Bodies made of slugs and guts,”—the album blends together almost too well. If I was asked to name my favorite song, I would probably balk, and have no real answer, until seeing the track list.

Last year, The Verge (of all places) put Album Savior Responsibility on Daft Punk. Sure, Random Access Memories is an excellent record, but damn is it a test to list to front-to-back. Parquet Courts are not big enough yet for someone to try and place that burden upon them,

Here’s that cat video I promised, it’s the video for the song of the same title as the album, “Sunbathing Animal.” You’ve made it this far, give that play button a press, and see what you think.
