My take on the show is that Naz, Chandra, and Box are all parallel characters, each on different stages of the metamorphosis caused by the criminal justice system. Naz is being transformed by Rikers in the ways emphasized by this article. Chandra is finding herself crossing the lines of her professional responsibilities as an attorney — which she becomes aware of when she kisses Naz. Box too becomes self-aware of his own moral and ethical erosion, realizing that he capable of tampering with a crime scene. None of these characters likely envisioned themselves crossing the lines they crossed when first entering the criminal justice system, but they each have died “ordinary deaths” at the hands of that very system.
