I don’t think I’m judging her. I’m celebrating her — as she is, as a girl, as an individual. And I’m doing my job, I think, in encouraging her to think about she labels herself — and others. If she’s going to be the author of her own story, I want her to have the best and fullest toolbox of language to tell that story. If she ends up calling herself tomboy, fine — at least she’ll have thought about it, and made that choice mindfully.
