How you know your headline is a hit:

— When your post is only a headline.

It’s just supposed to be a draft that you wanted to begin. Somehow, on your phone, you accidentally hit “Next” and your headline draft is instantly posted, for all to see. Just 5 words. That’s it.

The next thing you know, a surprise Medium notification pops up, letting you know that your mom has clapped for your post, that you didn’t even realize was a post.

Embarrassed, you try to delete it, but can’t seem to figure it out on your phone either. Your laptop is inside the house, buried somewhere under piles of laundry. It takes forever to power that thing up. Surely you could figure out how to delete that post on your computer later. Because right now, you’re sitting outside on the porch. All the kids are asleep and you can finally relax.

You’ll figure it out later. After awhile, you see a Facebook notification saying that your one-line post has been shared and liked. What? Did they even open the link?

Who cares? They noticed the headline and the writer, so they interacted with the post.

The headline worked.

Just goes to show the impact of a headline that catches people’s attention. Your 5 word post was interesting enough to be clapped for, shared, and liked on Facebook.

So it looks like you’re off to a good start. If you can nail that headline, you can nail that story. And that photo.

Never forget the power of the headline.
