More than 90 percent of the hernia repair surgeries in the U.S. involve the implant of hernia mesh. About one million surgeries for hernia is performed every year, most of which use hernia mesh. Initially, the FDA approved meshes as a safe medical device as it can prevent a hernia from recurring but over the years, there were plenty of reports about its complications.

What is hernia?

Hernias are caused in the abdominal wall by a tear in the weakened muscles. Once the muscles tear apart, internal organs and body fat push out through the wall to develop a ‘hernia’. However, before a hernia develops completely, the patient suffers from a prolonged period of weakened muscles. Over years, when it ultimately gets to the point of being too weak that it couldn’t support the internal organs, it leads to hernia.

Hernia mesh is a surgical implant which is commonly used for the extra support for the torn or damaged tissues. It works as the surgeons place the mesh around a hernia so that it can hold the damaged tissues and give strength. Typically, staples, stitches or glue is used to implant the mesh. With the use of hernia mesh, there is a lesser chance of hernias returning after the repair surgery. The stitches in a conventional hernia surgery can sometimes tear apart leading to hernia recurrences which is fewer in case of hernia meshes.

But still, there are thousands of cases for hernia mesh lawyers on the mesh surgery complications.

Despite reduced chances of hernia recurrence, the surgical mesh for hernia repair is not always the safest option for the treatment of the condition. Patients should have an elaborate discussion with their physician to understand the pros and cons of the mesh implant. Also, they should check with their doctors whether to use absorbable or non-absorbable mesh.

Thousands of victims of hernia mesh complained about mesh erosion and associated pain which required a corrective surgery to get rid of. Some of the common symptoms that show the body is rejecting the hernia mesh include:

· Severe and debilitating Pain

· Mesh migration

· Obstructions

· Adhesions

· Organ perforation

· Swelling

· Hernia mesh pain

· Bacterial infections

· Hernia recurrence

Claims and updates

Since 2005, more than 200,000 units have been recalled by the hernia mesh manufacturers. Ethicon also declared a “market withdrawal” of the meshes.

Class action lawsuits have been filed where the hernia mesh lawyers fight for the plaintiffs to get compensation for:

· expenses of the ongoing and future medical bills

· loss of wages

· damage for earning capacity

· damage for the present and future pain and suffering (both physical and psychological)

· expenses for corrective surgeries

The manufacturing companies are blamed for not warning the physicians or the patients about the potentially harmful side effects of the hernia mesh. Moreover, sometimes they took corruptive ways and asked the physicians to advise the patients that meshes are the only way to correct a hernia. The companies kept in advertising their product as a safe and effective device whereas the reports of hernia mesh complications were already gaining momentum. Basically, the companies placed their profit before the importance of public health.

Victims have faced significant and long-standing injuries from hernia mesh surgeries and repairs. Qualified hernia mesh lawyers analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the medical records and help the victims obtain monetary compensation.
