Thank you!
An animator is more of an artist than a game designer, although the two work closely when implementing new content that requires animations.
Although you technically can follow any of the ways mentioned in the article, animators are rare beasts when it comes to modding communities or indie game development — that is both a pro and a con. You will probably face a challenge finding a project that requires an animator, but when you do, the demand will presumably be pretty high.
I’ve had a small talk with our animator regarding your question and he says that the best way would be going through the courses or a school for animators / artists.
Your technical skills are what matters the most. In game development animators primarily use Maya (and less often 3ds Max). Get good with those tools and practice. Your location doesn’t really matter if you’re a professional, a big company can help you relocate. You will probably have to establish yourself as a specialist first before moving right into Ubisoft. Such companies usually require a few years of prior experience.
