Dreaming up images using DALL•E 2

Having sold and been active on the stock photography market in the past, I was drawn to the amazing capabilities of a model trained on pixel sequences with the ability to generate near-perfect imagery based on a text prompt.

On micro-stock photography sites, customers are able to search for images from an image repository library. Photographers who upload to these micro-stock sites engage in keyword entry for each individual photo they upload, with the intent that these tags would help surface their images to prospective customers who are matched with their image results via the stock photography search engine. It would essentially have the photography seller describe their photograph in words.

How does DALL•E compare to micro-Stock Photography?

Vastly different, but —

Similar worlds in that the entry of text prompts bring up images related to the structure of natural language. Except, with DALL•E, users are able to create versions of images based on word descriptions, attributes and style they themselves input. This can be a scenario, concept, setting, or anything, really – anything one can dream up in and out of this world.

On a whim, I tested out DALL•E 2: a deep learning neural network from OpenAI “creating images from text,” free to try.

(I also picture this to be a powerful tool for anyone looking to source AI-generated visuals for project presentations)

Here are some results I got using the DALL•E 2 preview app BETA:

latte art of a dolphin

from inside a dark cave looking out to a vibrant world

a colourful and mono-linear alphabet

a realistic robot enjoying a day off at the beach

a photorealistic image of a sun lit room with a monstera plant on the side

irredescent snowflakes on the cover of a cd-rom

a family building ikea furniture together

a futuristic city with an optimistic outlook and nature in the background

a photo of a dog enjoying a popsicle at a snowy but sunny ski resort

live entertainment work site during set up with colourful spotlights within the area

a photo of racoons on a surf vacation, they are wearing wetsuits and carrying colourful surfboards

a cute 3D seahorse in an aquarium on a bright background

a painting of a peacock in the style of Starry Night

How about a menu item order?

2 sunny side up eggs, one strip of bacon, 2 waffles, hashbrown, milkshake

a swimming pool with a floating pineapple wearing sunglasses

a swimming pool with a floating pineapple wearing pink sunglasses

a kid drawing of dancing broccoli at dinner time

3d render of pancakes with a cherry on top and on a yellow background

3d render of pancakes with raspberries on top and on a green background

a realistic photo of a dinosaur seeking shade underneath a ginkgo tree

graphic illustration of a group of flamingos standing in blue lagoon water

DALL•E 2 also has a “surprise me” button feature where it comes up with a prompt for you all in a single click!

For instance, let’s say I hit “surprise-me!”

a sunlit indoor lounge area with a pool with clear water and another pool with translucent pastel pink water, next to a big window, digital art

Pretty neat, hey?
