This is great. Sadly, when my wife and I (who have no kids) hang out with friends who have kids, we often leave feeling like we didn’t spend any time with the friends. We definitely watch them interact with their children. Conversation stops every 4 seconds for kid interruptions that derail any talk. We respond by giving up and settling for superficial (unsatisfying) blah-blah .
It’s challenging because, as you pointed out, we are all so busy that a confirmation on the calendar is a valuable gift to both give and receive. We often feel like we just miss our friends more after seeing them because we don’t actually spend the time BEING together.
