The Backstory: I Release You
The most explicitly erotic story I’ve written to date is I Release You. And now you can read the backstory, in my new book.
Easter Sunday. The pirate bar with all the rum drinks. Rain.
“My problem with open relationships isn’t so much the sleeping with other people,” I say, “It’s the superiority complex people have about it. Like they’re so evolved and so much better for having an open relationship.”
He laughs. And he says, “I was in an open marriage.”
“Really?” I say. “That’s funny.”
“Yeah,” he says, “People think an open relationship is some kind of Utopia. It’s just a different set of problems.”
He takes a drink then sets his heavy glass on the sticky bar. He leans in and tilts his head, and then he’s kissing me. His face is scratchy.
“Wanna get out of here?” he says.
“How would that work,” I say.
“We could go to your place. Or to mine.”
“Mine is closer,” I say. “And I don’t want to be far from home.” I have a meeting in the morning. It’s raining. I want to be at my place.
“So, how do we do this? If you were writing the scene, how would you write this transition?”
He says, “Lights up, your place.”
I smile.
Lights up, my place.
