In July 2016, GiveDirectly’s team in Uganda delivered 4,763,065,700 Ugandan shillings, or about $1.4 million. Team Kenya sent 100,198,750 Kenyan shillings, or about $1.0 million. So the scale is building, and it’s a really labor-efficient operation.
Those transfers in July hit 7,400 households (over 30,000 people).
Since inception, I think they have given to 30,000 households, reaching about 150,000 people.
Interestingly enough for people like you and I — a major backer/driver/board member is Chris Hughes, of Facebook foundership fame.
Their upcoming project (Dec 2016) is to conduct a true wide-scale Basic Income pilot, which in my opinion, is the real catalyst to understanding the ability for cash transfers to alleviate extreme poverty. — https://www.givedirectly.org/basic-income
